Nice Guys Box

Nice guys may finish last but despite all the stereotypes there are an awful lot of nice guys who box.

I had a death in the family about two weeks ago and have been amazed by the support of the guys at my gym--many of whom really don't know me that well.

I've often noticed what a really nice group of guys most boxers are, but this outpouring of kindness at such a difficult time surpassed all the evidence I have previously seen.

Kudos to all who are giving the falsely maligned sport the good name it deserves!

manny, there was a decent masters turnout from the socal area in july, at the bcr desert showdown...maybe you can get some contact info from the promoter and contact the masters that entered that tournament ?

Hi I'm Spencer Jackson I am currently an Area Manager for Heroes Fitness Store based in Norwich Norfolk UK.

I love your site and will spend some time reading through and making notes, as I am planning a visit to USA next spring.

So, here goes ...

As I've said already my name is Spencer and I'm based in the UK. I am a qualified conditioning coach, fitness trainer, sports therapist, sports nutritionist and also hold a black belt in San Chia Chuan Kung Fu, my main qualifications were taken with Premier Fitness the most recognised company in the UK by fitness professionals. I am very interested in expanding my knowledge of boxing and I'm at present a member of our local gym where I spar regularly.

Thanks for the oportunity to introduce myself, I'll have a good look around now if that's ok.

Got a call from a friend of mine, Bob Miller.

He's a top shelf pro cutman. One of the best. Has 2 sons who are pro and has trained many great boxers over the years. I believe he put on Mike Tyson's first pro show in Troy NY. He is one of the organizers for the NYS Golden Gloves. I asked him about adding masters this year and he made it happen.

He enjoyed working with us "Masters" so much that he wants to have a fight night if not a tournament on December 12th in Saratoga NY. Just depends on interest. He says he loves Masters because we show up! lol

So.....how does everyones calendar look for the 12th of December? Let's here who wants to step into the squared circle in one of the most beautiful areas in NYS.

I will be there. 195lbs 41 years old by then. Currently 4-4 lifetime.

P.S. Masters will be in the Godlen Gloves again in 2010. NYC masters are including in the upstate gloves. The regionals will be at Turning Stone Casino (nicest venue I have ever fought in). The finals might be there as well.

I think this might be the issue that really breaks out as I'm getting phone calls for advertisement that will help make the magazine more easilly available. Ringside World Championships

Good afternoon everyone,
There is a great turn out of Masters here at Ringside, over 100 master boxers competing. I will be photographing, videotaping and working the corner of two of my fighters.

I'll be posting some of the photos tonight with details on some of the matches. Was hopping to get all matches video taped with the help of students from The Art Institute but it doesn't look like they are going to show up. The show must go on and will be getting interviews and photo shoots done this weekend.

Master's @ Gleason's Aug 1st

Can I get a BOOYAH?! Masters at Gleasons rocks. This months show was held outside directly under the Manhattan Bridge around the corner from the gym. There were 14 exciting bouts lined up for the evening and they did not disappoint. Two Masters bouts were scheduled but only one took place. The opponents for Michael Pasternack (1-1) and myself (1-0) didnt show leaving the two of us to battle it out for Masters supremacy.

I quickly engaged Michael in the first round to set the tempo. Landing an overhand right I gave him a taste of my power to show him I meant business. He retaliated with wide hooks letting me know what kind of power he possessed. I held my ground and looked for openings managing to evade his strong punches while countering with straight shots down the middle. Pouring on the pressure I trapped him against the ropes forcing the ref to deliver a standing eight count. Before we could truly resume the action the round ended.

In the 2nd round we returned to basics exchanging jabs. Not be outdone Michael showed his brute strength muscling me into a corner. But I would not stay put to be hammered on. Fighting back I slipped out of the corner returning fire with heavy body shots to slow down my larger foe.

In the 3rd we both came out determined to finish one another. Reestablishing my jab I went on the offense mixing up my combinations while continuing to target his chin and body to administer as much punishment as I could. Michael put everything he had into a overhand right that unfortunately missed its intended recipient. Ducking under the blow I countered with a blistering right cross, left uppercut, right hook that spun him around depositing him on the canvas. Still determined to fight on, he resumed the fight, but I let loose a flurry of punches that left him covering up in the corner where the referee halted the bout.

To note: officials weights were M. Pasternak 204 lbs, C. Hoskins Jr. 179 lbs.
